Mary Elizabeth Claiborne was born 24 May 1824 at "Claybrook,” near Rocky Mount, Franklin County, Virginia, the daughter of Virginia Senator and US Congressman Nathaniel Herbert Claiborne and Elizabeth Archer Binford.
She married John Thomas Wilson, Jr. on 30 March 1843 at Blue Ridge House, Botetourt County, Virginia. Her handwritten note in the family Bible: "I have been married 41 years today - have 5 kind good children leaving one dead. May we all meet in Heaven when life’s journey is over. Sunday March 30th 1884 Mary Wilson at P......." She died 19 January 1901 and was buried beside her husband in East Hill Cemetery, Salem, Roanoke County.
