Elizabeth Archer Binford was born 20 May 1799 in Goochland County, Virginia, the daughter of Thomas Binford and Susanna Jarrett. Her family's land, inherited from her great grandfather in 1752, was part of Henrico County. Her father purchased land in Goochland in 1806. He is styled " a great landowner." She married Nathaniel Herbert Claiborne 17 May 1815 in Fluvanna County. She was the grandmother of Josephine Claiborne Wilson St. John. Elizabeth Archer Binford was said to be very beautiful. Her husband was US Congressman representing Franklin County, Virginia. As a new bride, she was toasted by (President) John Quincy Adams as the most beautiful woman he had ever seen. All six daughters of Elizabeth Binford were reputed beauties. This is the story told by the family. However, John Quincy Adams was not President at the time of this marriage. The family Bible of Mary Elizabeth Claiborne has this handwritten note: My mother, Mrs. E. A. Claiborne died in Fincastle in her 88th year . She lived without an enemy and died with the love of all that knew her. And now we believe she rest (sic) in heaven - God grant that her children may all turn to God. Help me oh Lord to live near to my crop - Nov 11 1883 Salem,VA my sons James and Robert are with us.
