From the 10/30/1913 Van Wert, Ohio, Daily Times: "John Wesley Allen, a well known pioneer resident of this city and county, passed away Wednesday morning about 10:30 o'clock as the result of a stroke of paralysis, suffered some weeks ago. Mr. Allen showed a wonderful vitality and withstood a shock that would have taken many a younger man, and it was not until a few days ago that hope for his recovery was given up. Mr. Allen was born in Fairfield County, March 4, 1836, and when a young man came to this county settling in Union Township, where he resided for about 20 years when he removed to this city, where he won a host of friends for his strict integrity and the wholesome friendliness of his kindly nature. Mr. Allen always took an active interest in the Democratic party, and at one time served the party as a justice of the peace. Mr. Allen's beloved wife preceded him to the other world, passing away Aug. 22 of this year, and her death undoubtedly hastened Mr. Allen's death. One brother, Charles L. Allen, of Muncie, Ind., and a daughter, Miss Ora Elma Allen and a son, Hugh E. Allen, survive him. The funeral services will be held from his late home Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock, with interment in Woodland Cemetery."
