James Arthur Brittain, 89, died peacefully of natural causes in the Rocky Mountain Care Center on October 31, 1996.
Mr. Brittain was born November 11, 1906, in Weiser, Idaho, the son of Marcus D. and Clara Midred (Ward) Brittain.
At an early age he learned the ethics of hard work by helping to run and Idaho farm with his Uncle Gilbert. He later worked as a cowhand on the UC Ranch in Nevada. His greatest life pursuit began in 1972 when he hired on with the Union Pacific Railroad. he successfully and loyally completed 46 years as a fireman and engineer, working mainly between Ogden, Utah and Green River, Wyoming. he was able to participate in and enjoy the gradual transition of the railroad from steam engines to modern diesels.
On October 31, 1931, he married Alberta Wintle in Ogden, Utah. They were later divorced in 1961. They had three children: Mrs. Arlo (Bertie Lou) Adams of Clearfield, Utah; Jim (Sandy) Brittain of Sacramento, Calif.; and Mrs. Ronald (Jane) Hunsaker of Kaysville, Utah.
In 1996 he married Myrtle Johnson in Evanston. She has been his loving and caring companion ever since.
He enjoyed the outdoors, being an avid fisherman and hunter for many years. He also developed a talent as a golfer and was a member of the Evanston Purple Sage Golf Club.
His pride and joy was his family, which included 11 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. At the end of his life, he was able to give them a wonder example of a person of dignity and love who had the courage never to give up, even when the odds seemed insurmountable.
He is survived by his wife; his children; a brother, Ross Brittain, and his Wife, Thora of Moses Lake, Wash.; and a sister, Peggy Marr, and her husband, Ray, of Touchet, Wash.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, John Brittain; two sisters, Mabel Clements and Edith Barry; and a very special friend, Buffy. Arrangements by Crandall Funeral Home in Evanston.
