Selig Steinig, a son of Israel Steinig and Ciwie Schachner, was born c. 1860 in Kostryzhivka, a village then in the Austrian crown land of Bukovina. He later lived in Tluste (now Tovste), the Galician shtetl where several of his children was born.

In May 1900, not long after the death of his first wife, Chaya Tzippe (nee Wachstein), Selig immigrated to America. He and his daughter Rosa arrived in New York City on June 5, 1900, intending to join an older daughter, Minnie, on the Lower East Side.

In November 1902, Selig married Tauba Wurman Schachner, and on February 9, 1903, son Isser (later Isidore) arrived in New York. Sadly, Rosa died just five weeks later, of tuberculosis.

By 1905, son Morris (Moshe Leib) had also emigrated and lived with Selig, Tauba, "Issie," and Tauba's son and father at 250 Broome Street on the Lower East Side. Within a few more years, Selig's daughter Lena (Libe - arr. Jan 1909) and son Harry (Hersch - arr. Sep 1910) were also in the United States and living with Selig and Tauba in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.

According to his U.S. arrival record, Selig was a carpenter, but by 1910 he was the owner of a candy store.

Like his daughter Rosa, Selig died of tuberculosis, the disease that plagued NYC's poor neighborhoods at that time.
