SEDAN APPARENTLY FAILED TO HEED STOP SIGN AT INTERSECTION NEAR WASHINGTON, PA.
Washington, Pa., July 5 (UP) -- The death toll in the collision of an automobile and a passenger bus reached seven today, when MRS. ALBERT BAILEY, 53, died in the hospital here, 12 hours after the crash.
Washington, Pa., July 5 (AP) -- Collision of a light sedan automobile with a passenger bus early today killed six persons, including three children, as they sped toward their West Virginia homes after a holiday outing.
Victims were FRED WENDT, 35, his wife, 35, and two of their three children, JOAN, four, and and eight-month-old daughter, all of Wellsburg; and ALBERT BAILEY, SR., 55, and his son, JIMMY, 14, Follanbee.
MRS. BAILEY, 53, and ALBERT BAILEY, JR., 16, were injured so seriously they may die. Four-year-old JOSEPH WENDT also was hurt but hospital attendants expected him to recover.
The two families were traveling in the automobile driven WENDT. Passengers on the Blue Ridge bus figuring in the crash were reported unhurt.
State Motor Policeman S. C. Cronrath said the WENDT car apparently failed to heed a stop sign at the highway intersection a mile east of here and crashed almost head-on into the eastbound bus which left the Washington terminal for Baltimore shortly before the wreck at 1:30 a.m. EST.
The sedan, its side caved in, skidded across the highway and plunged down a ten-foot embankment. It hit the front porch of the Henry Lacock home with such force that occupants of the place said they were almost jolted out of bed.
Bodies of the victims were mangled badly. WENDT'S baby daughter died almost instantly, its head crushed. The others succumbed before being removed from the wreckage or enroute to the hospital. MRS. BAILEY and ALBERT BAILEY, JR., suffered skull fractures in addition to other hurts.Evening Times Cumberland Maryland 1939-07-05
