Dr. Kuckein was born 14 Oct 1853 in Danzig, Germany (*now Gdansk, Poland), a son of a paymaster for the German army. He studied medicine at Marburg, Berlin, Germany, and graduated with honors from the University of Munich. He immigrated to the US in 1888, arriving first in New York and settling in Chicago where he married Miss Alice Preussing. In 1889 he settled in Oakland, CA, moving to San Francisco in 1891.
He was a leader of the local German colony, organizing the German-American League of California in 1901 and was its president for 3 years. During the great earthquake and fire of 1906 he was one of the first physicians to offer his services and was one of the organizers of the German-American Relief Committee. He was a consulting physician at the local German Hospital and belonged to the Society of German Physicians and Surgeons.
He died 10 Jan 1907 (age 53) a few days following surgery for appendicitis. He left behind his wife (Alice) and 5 minor children (Ernst, Siegfried, Edwin, Gertrude, and August). Funeral services were held Sun 13 Jan at the hall of the Young Mens' Hebrew Association, 1970 Page Street, San Francisco, under the auspices of the German-American League of California. Interment I.O.O.F. (Odd Fellows) Cemetery. **Remains from the defunct IOOF cemetery were later moved to Greenlawn Memorial Park in Colma, California.∼Cremation record has Kuchein
