Edith Danks Tanner was born on March 7, 1908 at Jim Danks ranch South of Edgemont. Her parents were Pete Danks and Myrtle Ball Danks. She grew up in a four-room house on Plumb Creek In 1926 when she was 22 years old she went by train to attend Brookings School of Agriculture College for High School. She graduated in May 1930 and came back to Edgemont and married Isaac Tanner June 1, 1930 in Hot Springs, SD.
In 1940 at age 32, she was diagnosed with polio and quarantined for one month with four little kids. After a year of hard work she could walk and in 1942 she moved with her husband and children to Ohio. They lived at a ranch at Glenmont. She worked hard milking 8-10 cows every morning and evening and selling the milk.
In June 1948 she brought her five kids back to SD and lived at the Danks' ranch west of Edgemont. She spent her life cooking, doing laundry, sewing, crocheting, embroidery work and doing many things for others. She continued sewing for others until she was 91. She did laundry with a gas wringer washer once a week. In the winter she melted snow to get water for laundry, dishes or bathing. She cooked on a wood stove and used it to heat irons for ironing. She lived her life without electricity until 1967.
In 1975 she moved from the ranch into Edgemont. She was available for anyone who needed her. She sewed and did mending for several people in town. She was a member of United Church for 25 years and the Methodist Women. She joined the International Order of the Odd Fellows Rebeccas Lodge Nov 9 1976 and received her 25 year pin.
She lived her life happy and as full as she. Her parents, her brother Lawrence, and son Harold preceded her in death.
Left to celebrate her life are her children: Marie Rothenberger, Darlene Hobbs and husband Wiley, Jerald Tanner, John Tanner and wife Evelyn and Carolyn Duemig and husband Bob, grandchildren Dolly Ann Rothenberger and Richard Rothenberger, and daughter Rachel, Vicki Tanner, Mike Hobbs, wife Cindy and children David and Jonathan, Karen Tegue, husband Jeff and son Christopher, Bruce Hobbs and wife Rebecca, Bill Tanner, wife Richelle and sons Tyrel and Tehl, Teressa Erickson and children Sheryl, Mike, Amanda and Dan Schutt, and Robert Ruhl, Richard Tanner and wife Lisa, and children Clayton, Ashley and Austin, Jeff Tanner and Julie Hanes, husband Larry and sons Jonathan and Andy, Raymond Jackson wife Dawn and son Christopher, Tully Jackson wife Sheila and sons Cody and Colton, Christopher and Joe Duemig.
