Mary was born on 22 January 1874, in Markowice in Posen (Poland). She was baptized at the church in Krerowo. Her parents were Joseph and Frances (Kasperski) Szwajkowski, and she had seven brothers and two sisters. In 1901 her uncle arranged for her to sail to America aboard the SS Konprinz Wilhelm. She arrived in New York two days before Christmas. Her final destination was Peru, Ill., where she was to join Lukasz Lipiecki - a man she married the on the last day of the year, a week after her arrival.
