She was born January 28, 1931 in Mantua, Utah the 6th child of 7 born to Ernest Edgar Johnson and Marina Minnerly Perkins. When Marva was three years old, her mother passed away and soon after her father married a wonderful lady, Ruth M. Burklund, who instantly Marva called "MOM".

Marva grew up in Mantua, Utah where she attended elementary school. She graduated from Box Elder High School in 1949 in Brigham City, Utah. She then attended BYU in Provo, Utah and Utah State University in Logan, Utah. After school, she served a full-time mission in the Northern States Mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It was there that she met her sweetheart, Gary Empey, a full-time missionary from Idaho. After their missions, they were married in the Logan LDS Temple on April 3, 1957.

Marva was a very selfless, giving person. She loved serving others around her. She was a very social person who would start a conversation with anyone. She was a hard worker and was a great example of service. She loved being at home with her children but also enjoyed helping with the family budget. She sold Tupperware, Lavoy Apparel, Avon, and Fuller Brush. She also worked at Payne's IGA Grocery Store in Rockford. She enjoyed her time working at Blackfoot Motor Company also. She finished her working career at Blackfoot School District as a paraprofessional (teacher's aide).
