Adella Gibson
(1925 - 2015)

Adella Gibson was born on March 1, 1925 in Decatur, Alabama, where she attended school until the 8th grade and started working to support the family. She married William Gibson in 1948. Adella traveled with her husband while he was serving in the U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force respectively. Adella talked about these travels fondly. When her sister Edna passed away, Adella took in Edna’s daughter Geanie and raised her as her own, along with her own daughter Lottie. They moved to Portland, to work at the ship yards and other jobs. After joining Highland United Church of Christ, Adella started a job as a cook, at the Yaun Youth Center for Boys, where she continued to work for 20 years. During this time, she was a committed member of Highland, teaching Sunday school and serving on many of the committees at the church and helping wherever she was needed. In 2007, after the amputation of her left leg due to diabetes, she went to live at Marquis Care Piedmont, where she made new friends and continued to be involved in doing whatever was needed. She enjoyed attending to the garden, making necklaces and bracelets to give to the children, while also enjoying bingo with her friends. Adella continued to support Highland Church, by also giving away all the stuffed animals to the children of Highland that she would win at bingo. This gave Adella great joy to see the smiles on the children's faces. Adella loved fishing all over Oregon, canning, cooking, gardening and was a committed member to Highland United Church of Christ. Adella was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brothers, Richard Lee Robinson, Elmer Robinson and Jessie Robinson, sisters, Edna O'Neill Robinson and Mattie Morrison. She is survived by daughter, Lottie Gilmore, grandchildren, Benjamin Gilmore, Rose Gilmore, niece, Geanie Robinson, Grandnephew, Charles Bishop, great grandnieces and nephews, Lincoln J. White, Auchee' J. Bishop, Isaiah F. White, Akim M. Bishop, Nyiemah A. Bishop and Zaire L. Moore Bishop
