Reed, Rev. Francis, son of Samuel and Anna (Sayles) Reed was born in Grafton, N. H., July 1, 1820. He was converted in Lowell, Mass., in 1841, being baptized by Rev. J. Woodman. He fitted for college at Dracut Academy in Massachusetts, working at his trade as carpenter at the same time. He graduated at Whitestown, N. Y., in theology in the class of '49. After teaching several terms, he settled at Meredith Centre, where he was ordained Feb. 13, 1850, by a council from the Belknap Q. M. He has held pastorates at Meredith, Contoocook (where over fifty were added to the church), Portsmouth and Strafford, N. H., and North Berwick, Farmington, Gray, Lebanon and Bath, Me., and at Grafton, Mass. He settled at Starksborough, Vt., in 1884. He has had revivals in every pastorate except one. His pastorates have averaged a little over four years. Once, when voice failed doing revival work, he spent some time supplying at Mendota, Ill. He was chaplain for eight months near the close of the war. He married July 5, 1849, Miss Apphia Godwin, of Lowell, Mass., who died after a useful life June 22, 1886; a son and a daughter live in Lawrence, Mass.

The records of the First Baptist Church of Starksboro VT indicate that Rev Francis Reed was received into membership 5 Sep 1885 from Freewill Baptist Church, Strafford Corner NH and he was dismissed 7 Sep 1889.

He married his first wife, Apphia, on 5 Jul 1849 in Lowell, Middlesex MA. She died in Starksboro in 1886 and he remarried her sister, Arvilla in Starksboro on 21 Aug 1887. There is also a record of this marriage in Cape Elizabeth ME on 25 Aug 1887, the Rev. Asa F. Hutchinson who was a Free Will Baptist pastor officiating.
