Aged: 71 Years - 8 Months.
Husband of: Hannah Buchanan.

John Buchanan, Sr. came from Ireland (possibily born in Scotland), and the earliest United States information known about him appears on the 1840 census record where it lists him and four other family members living in Lackawannock, Mercer County, PA. This census record also lists two of John's brothers, Walker and James, living in close proximity.

He married Hannah Campbell of Pennsylvania (no known date), and they had seven known children all born in the Mercer County area: Martha, John, Susan Mariah, William, Levi, James and Sarah.

For an unknown reason between 1850 and 1860 John and Hannah moved to Perry, Jackson County, Iowa along with three of their adult children leaving the remaining children and grandchildren in Pennsylvania.

The 1860 Iowa census record lists John's occupation as a farmer.

NOTE: His youngest son, James Y. Buchanan of Iowa, fought for the Union in the Civil War as well as his grandson, James Buchanan, of Pennsylvania.
