The search for Hiram Vaughn begins with his posting on Find a Grave as an unmarked grave. The information was sourced as, "from the obit only. Aged 86 years. Veteran of the Civil War." So, we went looking for his obit. This source also provided his place of burial, and four survivors; two daughters, Mrs. Dykes and Miss Rebecca Vaughn, and two sons, C.W. and Isaac Vaughn.
The next discovery was his death certificate which states his occupation as an "old Union soldier during the Civil War." This source confirms his place of burial, and provides the names of his parents, Joshua and Sylvia Vaughn, and the informant was his son, Charles W. Vaughn. It confirmed him as a Union soldier.
From there we searched for his military records through his pension cards which provide a match for his place of death and his date of death. He served in Company B 118th Ohio Infantry and also Battery G 4th United States Artillery. He enlisted in the 118th on 15 May 1864 and was discharged 24 June 1865.
