Bena Taylor Kirkscey, 86, of Rosebud, Texas passed away at her home on July 6, 2015.
Bena was born September 20, 1928 in Junction, Texas to Albert Ray and Deana Lorena Taylor.

She graduated from Junction High School in 1945 and from Southwestern University in Georgetown in 1948 with a B.A. in English and journalism. She was editor of the 1948 S.U. yearbook.
At Southwestern, she met the love of her life, Tom D. Kirkscey. They were married on July 25, 1948.

After college, Bena taught high school English in Rochelle and Eagle Lake, Texas for two years before beginning her family. She continued her career teaching third grade for 30 years at Rosebud Primary School.
During the 1970s, she was involved in the Follow Through federal education program and attended training conferences in Boston. Bena was an avid genealogist, researching across the state and country in courthouses and cemeteries. She was a founding member of the Taylor Family Association--a Texas genealogical association--and a member of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas. She was a well known authority on Texas history and appeared on a History Channel program to describe the Taylor-Sutton feud.

She was an avid reader and loved to complete crossword puzzles. She collected antiques and spent many Saturday afternoons prowling East Texas for plants, baskets, and pottery.

Bena was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church and served in many capacities through the years.
She loved to watch her children and grandchildren play sports and show animals.
Bena is survived by her husband of 67 years, three children, six grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

Children include Tim Kirkscey and wife Janice, Mark Kirkscey and wife Kenna, and Russell Kirkscey and wife Laurie.
Grandchildren include Deana Schroeder and fiancé Jamie Smith, Matt Kirkscey and fiancée Sarah Danek, Chris Kirkscey, Amanda Kirkscey, Eleanor Kirkscey, and Thomas Kirkscey.

Great-grandchildren include Hayden Schroeder, Chandler Kirkscey, and Carson Kirkscey.
Pallbearers are her three grandsons, Kent Kahler, Bryan Parcus, and Carson Wallace.

Visitation was Friday, July 10. The funeral will be held at the Rosebud First United Methodist Church at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 11. Burial will be at Clover Hill Cemetery in Lott, Texas.

Memorial donations may be sent to the Methodist Children’s Home in Waco, Texas.
