William was born in Ballylisbraiden, Newtownards, to James & Mary Elizabeth Dickson. When he was about 5, in 1899 the family lived in Summerfield, Dundonald, situated roughly where the Stoney Road is, until his Mother suddenly died of Consumption in July 1900, a deadly disease in those days. William & his Father lived in 28 Witham Street (1901), 1 Oakdale Street (1906), 32 Greenville Street (1911) and various other addresses until settling in 139 East Bread Street.
William joined the Navy on July 10th 1910, serving on the HMS Pembrooke, rating STO11, until September 29th 1910, when his Father bought him out for a payment of £10.
William married Mary Campbell in April 13th 1912 in Dundela Presbyterian Church, Belfast. They had 3 children, James, Alexander & William. Unfortunately Mary died of Pneumonia in July 1918.
William married Annie McDonald on January 30th 1920 in Knock Presbyterian Church, they had 4 children plus 3 from his previous marriage.
William died in 139 East Bread Street, Belfast. in 1984 aged 92, and was buried alongside his wife Annie & Daughter-in-law Agnes.
William is my Grandfather.
