Emma Jane Hovenden Harris was born near Hubbard to a pioneer family that came to the area in 1849. Alfred Hovende came from England and Sarah A. Soden from Tasmania. They also stopped along the Hawaiian Islands before settling in Oregon.
Her siblings included an older sister, Caroline and younger siblings Annie and George.
Emma graduated from Willamette University in 1878. Prior to her marriage, she taught school.
She married Madison Lafayette (M.L.) Jones October 11, 1880.
She and M.L. lived in Brooks where they farmed and owned a store. (see photo)
