While a resident of Batavia, Illinois, Daniel Whipple served in the Civil War, enlisting as a private on June 8, 1862 with the 1st Iowa Volunteers, and served until being mustered out on Jan. 20, 1863.
Even when he was past the century mark, "Uncle Dan" Whipple, as he was known by his friends, would walk to Traverse City from his home near Hatch's Crossing (a railroad depot in Leelanau County's Elmwood Township), a distance of about 5 miles. He moved to the Traverse City region c.1885. He was the oldest man in Michigan at the time he died.
