Phillip Patterson Dies Thursday
Funeral services for Phillip Woodworth Patterson, business and civic leader, the son of Oregon's late Governor Isaac Lee Patterson who died Thursday at St. Vincent's hospital, will be held at the Miller & Tracey chapel at 9:30 A.M. Saturday, followed by commitment at Lincoln Memorial Park, Volture N. 25 of the 40 et 8 will be in charge.
The pallbearers will be Floyd Lynch, James Gordon, Stanley Boquist, E.C. Sammons, C. B. Stephenson and Walter Busc.
Early Swimming Champion
Mr. Patterson, who for many years had been prominent in the lumber industry, held the record of winning the first Christmas swim in Portland in 1909, being one of the earliest swimming and diving champions of the Multnomah Athletic club.
Born in Salem February 13, 1892, he attended Portland grammar schools, the Culver Military academy, Culver, Ind., and Stanford university, where he was a member of the Phi Pal fraternity. When world war I broke out he served as drill master at Multnomah stadium before the regular army training course was established.
He attended the first officers' training school at the Presidlo, San Francisco, where he was commissioned a second lieutenant in the United States army, and as an instructor in the second presidlo training school he was commissioned a captain. With the latter rank he completed his war service at Camp Lewis.
Member of Legion
His civic service included membership on the Portland city planning commission for many years and service as member and secretary of Portland local draft board No. 2.
He held membership in Portland post No. 1, American Legion and vollure 25 of the 40 ct 8, which he served as chef de guerre.
Mr. Patterson, married Miss Dorothy Ann Elkins of Dallas November 18, 1924, who with the son and daughter, Phillip W. Patterson Jr. and Barbara Jean, survive; also surviving is the brother, Lee Patterson, 1706 N.E. Mason street. The family home is 6208 S.E. 29th avenue.
