Son of Ulrich Grob and Marie Verena Naef, John was born Johannes Grob. He came to the United States in 1863. He was employed by Barnhart Brothers & Spindler as a type setter. John was an avid gardener and enjoyed reading. He diligently documented his life in yearly diaries which are still intact and in the family's possession.
On November 13, 1878, John married Katie Etter, daughter of Konrad and Anna Etter. John and Katie had three children:

Alfred John: born March 9, 1881 died August 1970
Herbert Franklin: January 26, 1883 died February 8, 1883
Katie died on February 1st, 1883 just a week before the death of her infant son, Herbert. Katie is buried in Forest Hills Cemetery in Boston.
On April 24, 1884, John Married Lizzie May Ward who was born August 17, 1853 in Highgate Vermont.
