Maria was born in 1845 in Clarendon, Quebec, Canada to David & Mary Ann (Osborne) Barr, at one time from Northern Ireland. The Barr family may have migrated from Scotland prior to the 1800s. She was the youngest of 13 children. After the death of her older sister, Elizabeth, Maria (pronounced Mariah) married her brother in law, John Wheelihan, and helped raise his daughters, Ada & Harriett "Dolly." They went on to have six children of their own: John David Alexander Wheelihan, Zillah May Wheelihan Griffin, Amelia Wheelihan Byer, James "Harry" Wheelihan, William "Billy" Wheelihan, & Pansy Wheelihan Wallace, the last two being born after they relocated the family to North Dakota.

Maria & John homesteaded the Wheelihan farm north of town and operated the Headquarters Saloon on Main Street. Maria was also a skilled horsewoman and cooked meals for both plaintiffs and defendants in her farmhouse where her husband presided as justice of the peace.
Maria was a strong woman and lived a long life of 94 years, 30 years after the passing of her husband. She enjoyed being active in the Ellendale community as well as the lives of her children and 12 grandchildren.
