Ray E. Gilbert, manager of O. L. Cowen Ford automobile agency in Barstow, died in car accident on Rim Highway about 300 feet passed Panorama Point when his automobile plunged over the side of the road down 400 feet into the canyon below. He was killed instantly as 3:15 a.m. on July 27, dying at the age of 34. He either fell asleep at the wheel or was forced from the road. His companion, Mrs. Katherine Houghton of San Bernardino, whom he was taking to Crestline where she was spending the summer with Mrs. Olive Berg. She was asleep at the time of the accident and was thrown from the car and escaped with minor injuries. A resident of San Bernardino for more than ten years, he was widely known as a salesman for the Cowen Ford agency before his transfer, and was a member of the Kiwanis Club. He was survived by his widow, Mrs. Marguerite L. Gilbert, sister of Mrs. Cowen. Mark B. Shaw is in charge of the funeral arrangements.
