The White family moved from Currituck Co, NC. It is said that in 1831 they moved with the families of Jesse Sawyer & Caleb & Mary (Curling) Forbes to Marshall Co, IL.

The patriarch of the NC White's was probably John White who came from England to Norfolk Co. VA in the early 1700s. The Whites & Curling families had ties going back to that time.

History tells of one White female and some children that came to Marshall county from Currituck County, NC. After arriving she was terribly homesick for NC. So much so that she walked all the way back to Currituck County, NC. She had no money and survived off the kindness of strangers on her return journey.

Back to Thomas and Martha. They apparently married before 1815 in NC. Tracing the White family in NC is still a pending project.

An 1830 Census entry in Currituck Co, NC shows a Thomas White with 6 males & 3 females
Males: 5 & under 3; 15-20 1; 20-30 1; 40-50 1.
Females: 5-10 1; 10-14 1; 20-30 1
Here it is assumed Thomas is the 40-50 male. The oldest female is 20-30.

The 1835 Putnam Co (now Marshall Co) Census, IL shows Thomas White family of 9 - 5 males & 4 females.
Males 3 - 10 & under, 1 - 10 & under 20, 1 50 & under 60;
Females 1 - 10 & under, 2 - over 10 under 20, 1 - over 30 under 40
[note the next line has a William White age 40-50, 2 males 10-20; females, 3 under 10, 1 10-20, 1 30-40 - possibly a brother.

The names are known of 4 children, James White, Amy (Buckingham), Rebecca (untraced) and Amos. Three of these children settled in adjacent Woodford Co, IL.

The earliest member of the NC White family was a Thomas White, not this Thomas. The early THomas settled on the Elizabeth River in Lower Norfolk Co. He possibly arrived in Virginia on the ship George that sailed from London on 21 Aug. 1635. His age was given as 16 years.[20]

Thomas White was listed as a headright on a grant to Thomas Sawyer for 250 acres on the Eastern Branch of the Elizabeth River in Lower Norfolk Co. on 10 March 1637/8.

So you can see that the White and Sawyer family have a very early connection that continued with the move from NC to IL
