Amelia was born in Canada, the third child of John P and Maria (Barr) Wheelihan. At the time of her birth, she had two older half sisters, Ada (Dawes) and Harriet (Payne), an older brother, John David Alexander, and an older sister, Zillah May. After the birth of her younger brother, James Henry "Harry," the family relocated to the Ellendale area. Her younger siblings, William & Pansy, were born on the family farm north of town. Amelia married Edward Byer and they had a son, Ray. Amelia died of Bright's Disease when her son was just an infant. She would be the grandmother of Jacqueline Byer Dial.
