After graduating from Lamoni High School, she continued her education at Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa. She taught in rural schools both before and a year after her marriage to Alma C. Hoffman on May 16, 1920.
To this union, 3 children were born: Darrel Wayne, Thelma Naomi, and John Rex. The 18 years of their married life were spent on the farm north of Lamoni which his mother owned. After the mortgage took the farm during the depression, they continued to live on the farm until Alma's death in 1938.
Florence and the 3 children continued to live on the farm until 1941 when they moved to Lamoni. The children finished high school and she resumed her career of teaching that had been interrupted during the raising of their family. In 1946 she accepted a position as State WeIfare worker in Decatur County, a position she occupied until 1951 when she resigned and returned to her first love that of teaching, a position she continued until she retired in 1964.
The last five years were spent teaching Special Education in Keokuk County, Iowa. After retirement she continued to do private tutoring in her home, also serving as part-time companion to an elderly lady for three years.
Florence was baptized at Des Moines, Iowa into the R.L.D.S. Church in October 1952.
Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband in 1938; daughter, Thelma White in 1952; son, Darrel in 1970; one sister; and 3 brothers, 2 of whom died in infancy.
Left to mourn are one son, John R. Hoffman and wife, Beniece; daughter-in-law, Ann Hoffman; and one brother, Clarence Bartlett and wife, Rosa, all of Lamoni; two grandsons: Mark White and John White and wife, Debbie, and their 4 children, all of Des Moines; one granddaughter, Debris Hoffman of Washington, D.C.; a host of other relatives and many friends.
