U.S. Ambassador, Diplomat. A graduate of Princeton University, he served as press secretary for Secretary of State William P. Rogers during the Nixon Administration. He joined the foreign service following graduation from college, serving in the Philippines and the Central African Republic. He became one of the State Department's chief spokesmen during the Vietnam War and one of the nation's foremost authorities on US-Soviet relations. He resigned his post as press secretary in 1973 after learning that President Richard Nixon had illegally wiretapped several high ranking State Department officials, claiming that they were national security threats. Following the Nixon administration, he served as deputy director of the United States Information Agency under President Jimmy Carter and was appointed by President Ronald Reagan as Ambassador to Senegal from 1981 to 1985.
