Leonard Church was born in East Hartford, CT and removed with his family in 1806 to Lee, MA, where his father built paper mills. At age 17 he went to work for his brother Charles in the newly-settled Ogden, NY, where Charles operated a successful dry good business. In 1819 in return to Lee and the family business, papermaking. With capital from a brother, he also entered the mercantile business. He made a tidy sum producing the faddish Navarino bonnets, made of paper. He left the paper business in1846. In 1844 he became president of the bank in Lee. He served to terms in the state legislature.
