Born in Caradoc, Middlesex, Ontario to Donald McDonald and his wife Mary (McIsaac), both Scottish by birth. He moved from Canada after the death of his father in 1877, settling with his widowed mother and family in Sheridan, Michigan. He married his wife Annie McGinnis in Gagetown (Sheridan Corners) in 1889. He farmed there until moving to Bad Axe in 1924. Together he and Annie had 6 children.
