Robert Newton Shofner was born on March 28, 1865 in Bedford County, Tennessee, and he was the son of Albert Jenkins Shofner (1829–1868) and Martha "Eran" (Landis) Shofner (1826–1869).
He was married about 1888 to Lelia Myrtle Cunningham (1867–1939), the daughter of John T Cunningham and Martha Jane (Campbell) Cunningham.
A retired postal employee and living at 316 Boscobel Street, Nashville, he was 75 years old and a widower when he died of chronic myocarditis at home on August 8, 1940. Burial was two days later in Spring Hill Cemetery in Madison [city, not county].
