On Feb. 28, 2006, my beloved yellow Laborador named Pearl, entered the land of eternal slumber due to a long battle with arthritis and no ACL muscle or left fang. She was 13.5 years old. Six years ago, we were suppose to baby-sit Pearl for the weekend while her owner placed her home for sale. Nobody wanted Pearl due to her being overweight and un medicated (her last vet appointment had been when she was 5!). My family fell in love with Pearl and we kept her because we didn't want such an awesome animal sitting in the pound.
For six years, we watched as Pearl grew from an overweight, neglected dog to a spoiled, happy, sleepy, snoring "puppy" that would beg at the dinner table each and every night. I have numerous happy memories of her. Pearl would sleep in my bedroom each night on a blue bed that my mom created. Going to sleep with Pearl was always noisy because she liked to lick her bed (like a cat), continuously changed sleeping positions, and snored. Her favorite sleeping places included: my parent's bedroom , the dining room floor, my bedroom, and in between the green recliner and the coffee table (which ultimately would annoy my mom because she could not sit in her favorite chair!)
Animals and children did not bother or annoy her. Pearl would allow rabbits and squirrels to come within inches from her while still sitting there like a rock. When we had guests enter our home, Pearl would sit there, expecting to be petted. If you petted her, then she was your friend for life. However, if you ignored her, then she would purposely paw you the minute you sat down on the couch or chair. Children adored her and she loved them, only because Pearl knew she would receive free dog treats since the kids enjoyed giving them to her. Watching her eat was interesting since one of her fangs had to be removed due to neglect from her previous owner. But she still managed to mangle a Chewie or eat human food. Pearl was also a picky eater. She hated bananas, carrots, and green beans but loved Dog Chewies. Not to mention Little Caesars dinners, french fries, and my moms scrambled eggs. When she got a chewie, she would pounce on it like a cat and then proceed to lick and chew it. If she didn't have food in her food bowl, Pearl would deliberately pick the bowl up with her teeth and drop it in the middle of the frontroom.
Outside adventures were always interesting. Giving Pearl baths was fairly easy because she would stand in the kiddie pool and be patient with me. Then when she would out, it was "Fast-Dry Cycle". She would shake all that yellow fur so that water went everywhere. Her 3 most favorite spots outside to lay were the backyard patio, the front stair stoop, and the grass next to the sidewalk. The occupants in moving vehicles would sometimes stare at Pearl as she lazily lay on the front stairs with one paw draped over the step and her head on the other paw. Watching her lay in on the backyard patio was funny because she would do this "Pot-belly Pig" position: both paws out and both back legs out. Think of it as "Doggy Splits".
Pearl was an awesome animal. My family and I will always miss her.
