Solomon Smith
Old Settler Died at Burden Monday

Solomon Smith, an early settler of this county, and one time resident of Winfield, died at his home in Burden, Monday, June 5, 1905, at the age of 77 years. His funeral will be held Wednesday, with burial in the Tisdale cemetery. At the request of himself and family, Hon. W.P. Hackney will deliver the funeral address.

The deceased was an uncle of S.A. Smith of this city. He was born in Marion County, Ill. Enlisting in the regular army quite young, he saw service in the Mexican war, being in the 4th infantry the regiment of which U.S. Grant was adjutant. After the war he married, and by his first wife eight children, seven of whom are living. His wife dying about twenty-five years ago, he married again, his second wife surviving, and has two children by her, both living.

In 1870, he came to Cowley county settling near Tisdale. In the early 80's they lived in Winfield. About fifteen or twenty years ago they moved to Burden where they have since lived. He was a life long democrat.
