Mary Pope attended Ward Belmont College and graduated from Vanderbilt University in 1942 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English Literature. She married her first husband, Bob Crichton in 1943 and they lived in Nashville and raised four sons until his untimely death in 1970. Upon her marriage to Billy Whitson in 1971, she moved to McMinnville, Tennessee where she lived until his death in 1998. She has since been a resident of Nashville.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by two loving husbands, Robert Masters Crichton and William Burroughs Whitson; one son, Richard Stout Crichton and one grandson, Nicholas Stout Crichton.
