The first record of Michael Crowley was as a boy of seven living in the Episcopal Orphan Asylum in Savannah, GA. According to the 1850 census records, he was born in GA. But a family oral history says that he was born in Ireland and entered this country as a stow-away on a ship. According to the 1860 census, he had moved to Liberty County, GA, and was living with a planter by the name of Jacob Shaw. On Aug 27, 1861, Michael enlisted in the Confederate Army of the US at Savannah, GA. On Jul 16, 1862, he was promoted to 4 Corporal. Records show that he spent time in St. Mary's Hospital, LaGrange, GA, in 1863, and was given $12.00 for military clothing on Jan 1, 1864, presumably as he was being discharged. His occupation was store clerk. He worked for Leander Trask at the General Store in Fleming, GA. Michael married Minnie Carter on Jan 25, 1866. They were married by Rev Hart Andrews. They lived at Fleming, GA. They became the parents of 12 children. According to letters written by his wife Minnie and his sister-in-law Mary Carter Feaster, Michael was a handsome man with blue eyes. He was short and muscular. The children were: Zepha Crowley Feaster Raulerson (adopted by her sister, Mary Carter Feaster); Eugene, Idelle, Ross, Joe, Claude, Percy, Frank, Minnie Belle, Nellie Crowley Deal, Lena, and Laurence.
