James, his wife, Belle and their children were part of the Peter Robinson immigration in 1825 and they settled in Otonabee on Con 9, lot 30. The Peter Robinson Papers state that he was a mason by trade. The family was listed as the Handlow's or Handlan's when they crossed the Atlantic on the Regulus. The immigration project allotted James and his two eldest sons, Michael and Maurice, land in Otonabee, near present day Peterborough. He and his wife are not buried near family in St Peters Cemetery so it is likely that they were buried on the family homestead as was often the custom before cemeteries were more common in the area. (It is possible that James was brought into Peterborough and buried in the town burial ground in the Catholic section on Murray St, but would have later been moved elsewhere when the burial ground was closed in the the mid 1850's.)

(note: James and Isabella also had a son, John Hanlon, born 1813 and was christened in Ballyhooly but died young in Ireland before the family emigrated to Canada)

(The opening statement in James Hanlon's will probate seems to state the date of his death. However the will did not go into probate until 1849.)

"No. 2842 Registerd
James Hanlon to Maurice Hanlon registed 12 noon on the 18 Jan 1849 oath of Edward O'Brien
Hartley Dunsford Cty Regr.
A memorial to be registered of the last Will and Testament of James Hanlon of the Township of Otonabee the Elder, deceased in the words and figures following that is to say - Otonabee Nov. 19th 1846."
