WIFE OF HASTINGS, BOBBY CHARLES
GMG1 US NAVYApril 1, 1936 – August 15, 2015

Our beloved Akemi Hastings was born in Yokohama, Japan on April 1, 1936 to Suekichi Numata (father) and Kanaka Saito (mother). She was the third of five children born to this union.

At an early age, Akemi learned the hardships of growing up in post war Japan, taking on the responsibilities of helping to care for her younger siblings after the deaths of both parents by the age of seventeen. Though her assets were very meager, she always had a heart of gold and would never deny anyone in need. This special quality became a common theme throughout her life. As a lover of knowledge and a life-long avid reader, she would excel in her academics during elementary and high school, even studying at night by candlelight when she couldn’t afford to pay for electricity.

In 1969, while working as a waitress in a military mesh hall in Yokosuka Japan, Akemi met Bobby C. Hastings, a young handsome Navy sailor. Initially not too enthused by his interest in her, she finally agreed to go on a date with the persistent young sailor. And despite the racial challenges of interracial relationships during those times, this unexpected courtship blossomed into a beautiful fifty-two year marriage and the births of four children.

Akemi peacefully left this world to begin her eternal journey on August 15, 2015 at home surrounded by her loving husband, children and grandchildren. She will be remembered as a selfless loving wife and mother, always supportive and encouraging, always loving and kind. She never complained and had a quiet strength. Forever graceful, she loved and lived every moment she was given. She always gave without expecting anything in return and her love was the force that multiplied these blessings higher and higher.

Akemi’s precious granddaughter Tianna Mai Bonner, preceded her in death but she leaves to carry on her legacy, her devoted husband Bobby C. Hastings; her two sons, Master Chief Le Hastings and daughter-in-law Jodi Hastings of Virginia; Robert Hastings and daughter-in-law Carla Hastings of San Diego; two daughters Andrea Bonner of San Diego; Lita Hastings of San Diego; grandchildren Akemi Bonner, Derrick Bonner, Cynthia Bonner, Aaliyah Bonner, Elijah Bonner, Derek Bronson, Danielle Hastings, Isaiah Fulton, James Edwards III, Robert Hastings Jr., Alex Hastings, Andrew Hastings, Maelynn Hastings, Le Aujanae Hastings, Le Ona Hastings and a host of other cherished family members in San Diego, Ohio, and Japan.
