Civil War Union Army Officer. He was mustered in as a Sergeant in Company H, 1st New Jersey Militia on April 30, 1861, serving through the July 1861 First Bull Run Campaign until his honorable muster out on July 31, 1861.

He was then mustered in as a Sergeant in Company C, 8th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry on August 29, 1861. He was promoted 1st Sergeant on July 1, 1862, commissioned 2nd Lieutenant on October 18, 1862, promoted 1st Lieutenant on December 28, 1862, and finally promoted Captain and commander of Company C on June 13, 1864. Transferred to Company A, he was wounded in action Boydton Plank Road, Virginia, and was discharged due to those wounds on January 31, 1965. However, he was re-commissioned Captain on February 18, 1865, and served until he was honorably mustered out on July 17, 1865.

At the Battle of Chancellorsville he was shot through both thighs.

On April 23, 1866 he filed for a US Army Invalid Veteran Pension (Application #106979, Certificate #68928).

He died at St. Michael's Hospital, Newark, New Jersey.

He was a member of Lincoln Post #11, G.A.R., Newark, New Jersey.
