Sergeant 3665 John Abela, 2nd Heavy Anti-Aircraft Regiment, Royal Malta Artillery.
Citation
At 1820 hours Sunday 12 April 1942 this N.C.O. was acting as Section Commander, Regiment Section at 'A' Heavy Anti-Aircraft position supervising his section in action. During this action a 2nd JU 88 dived bombed the position a 1000 pound bomb fell near No2 Gun emplacement just to the right of the slipway on which Sergeant Abela was standing N.C.O. was buried in the crater the gun was out of action for 24 hours. Though badly shaken and with bruises all over his face the N.C.O. carried on with No1 Gun refusing to be sent to hospital. His action was innovation to all present. He eventually reported to the A.D.S (Advance Dressing Station) on the 14 April 1942 after being "ordered" to do so. Th behaviour of this N.C.O. in action the dive-bombing attacks on his position contributed in no small part towards keeping high the morale of the whole troop.
