JOSEPH HOFFMAN Joseph Hoffman (above), 92, of Rt. 1, Maribel, retired town of Gibson farmer, and a well known musician, died early Monday morning at the Holy Family Hospital, Manitowoc. He had been a patient at the hospital since Friday but had been in failing health for a year. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Melnik Presbyterian Church, with Sherwood Roaoh, student pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.


Mr. Hoffman was born in Bohemia in 1862, where he learned the shoemaker trade and studied music. He came to this country at the age of 16 and located in Oconto County where he worked in a lumber mill. In 1886, he married Magdelena Peterik and they moved to Sheboygan where he was in the shoe business and a member of the Sheboygan Band. Later they moved to Milwaukee and then back to Manitowoc County and settled on a farm in the town of Gibson. The couple celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1936. The farm was taken over by the Hoffman's son in law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Rosso, following the death of Mrs. Hoffman 11 years ago. Mr. Hoffman made his home with the Rosso's.


Mr. Hoffman played in the Otto Wienshanik band and in the Manitowoc City Band. He became a member of the famous L. Goods band which played with the W.E. Coles circus. While with this band, he played in 33 states and Canada. He was also a member of the Novy Brass Band for 33 years. Mr. Hoffman played the cornet, baritone, bass and trombone.


Survivors are eight daughters, Mrs. Marvin Meyer, Mrs. John Pribek and Mrs. Joseph Bauer of Manitowoc; Miss Marie Hoffman and Mrs. George Stromberg of Milwaukee; Mrs. Clarence Rosso of Maribel, Mrs. Frank Peroutka of Francis Creek and Mrs. Edward Selner of Kenosha; stepbrohter, Joseph Starcy of Green Bay; 13 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. A son, Joseph, died in World War I.


Friends may call at the Saur Funeral Home in Kellnersville from 2 p.m. Tuesday to 10 a.m. Wednesday when the casket will be moved to the church where the body will lie in state until services at 2 o'clock. Manitowoc Herald Times, Monday, May 17, 1954 P.19
