Physician for 50 Years Buried in Metairie

Funeral services were held Monday for Dr. Edward Poreter Alexander Ficklen from the House of Bultman, St. Charles and Louisiana.

Services were conducted by the Rev. Leighton Nugent, assistant rector of the Trinity Episcopal Church. Interment was in the Metairie Cemetery.

Dr. Ficklen died Sunday at 8 a.m. at Baptist Hospital. He was 75.

A graduate of Tulane University, he practiced medicine at 4418 Magnolia for most of his 50 years of service in the New Orleans area. He retired in 1960.

Dr. Ficklen had been on the Baptist Hospital staff since the second year of its existence, a member of the Boston Club for 35 years, a member of the New Orleans Country Club and the Louisiana Club.

He was a charter member of the Tulane University Phi Beta Kappa chapter. Dr. Ficklen was named for his grandfather, Confederate Gen. Edward Porter Alexander.

Dr. Ficklen was a member of the American College of Surgeons and a colonel in the U.S. Public Health Service during World War II. He was born in Savannah, Ga.

Survivors include his second wife, Alice Grehan Ficklen; two sons, Edward Porter Alexander Ficklen Jr. and John Stirling Ficklen; and a sister, Mrs. Thomas Hilton, Savannah.

He was formerly married to the late Beatrix Kennedy.
