University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has a collection of writings by John Rose Ficklen, as well as letters to him, and by/to his wife and her family. He was the author of History of Reconstruction in Louisiana Through 1868, published by the Harvard Law Review Association.

John Rose Ficklen was married to Bessie Mason Alexander Ficklen, the daughter of General Edward Porter Alexander. She was an author and artist in her own right. She outlived him by decades, and died in Georgia in 1945.

PROF. JOHN R. FICKLEN

Fredericksburg, Va., Aug. 5.--News has been received here of the death of Prof. John R. Ficklen, formerly of this city, at Chantauqua, N. Y., from the affects of a fall received while fishing. Professor Ficklen was a graduate of the University of Virginia and of a European university and had been for years a professor of history and literature at Tulane University, New Orleans. He was a son of the late Joseph B. Ficklen, of Falmouth, and was 49 years old. He has many relatives here whom he visited recently. He is survived by his wife and two children, one brother, William F. Ficklen, of Falmouth, and two sisters, Mrs. J. P. Corbin, of this city, and Mrs. Dan M. Lee, of Stafford. The body will be brought here for burial.
