John Beteman was 31 when he enlisted at New York City to serve a 3 year tour. Mustered in as a private to CO A 47 NY INF August 27, 1863.
Missing in action Feb 20, 1864 at Olustee Fl. This was the site of one of the bloodiest battles of the war, thousands died and their bodies were hastily buried in a mass grave. The wounded were taken to Lake City Fl or to Tallahassee but because it was Confederate territory, bodies were also buried in trenches after they died and names were not recorded (This of course happened on both sides)
John's body could be anywhere.
