Stephen Palmer Cummings seemed to stick with his middle name after he returned from the Civil War. Palmer enlisted out of Clarence, Erie Co., New York and was in Company B. 116th New York Volunteers Calvary. A detachment of the 116th New York Volunteers had the distinction of killing Lincoln assassin John Wilkes Booth.

He was married twice, the first time was to Amy Richardson Cummings, and they had one child, Roy P. Cummings who was a dentist in Buffalo, New York and also a member of the board of the Cummings Cement Works, with locations across the county. He resided in Stamford, Connecticut for a time when the Cummings Cement corporate headquarters relocated there.

His second marriage was to a lady named Emma and they resided together in 1900 in Victor Town, Ontario Co., New York about 60 miles from Akron, New York. Palmer was listed in both the Victor, NY census and well as the 1900 census of Newstead, NY. Emma and Palmer appeared to have divorced by 1910.
