Mervyle Carey, 96, of Mason City died Saturday, October 10, 2015 at Hospice of North Iowa.

Visitation will be from 4-8 pm on Thursday, October 15, 2015 at Fullerton Funeral Home. Funeral service will be at 11:00 am with a one hour prior visitation on Friday, October 16, 2015 at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church, 2502 S. Jefferson Ave, Mason City. Reverend Matthew Muters will be officiating. Interment will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery.

Mervyle was born on March 29, 1919 in Rockwell, IA to Henry and Margaret Arndt. She was the middle child of 11 children and grew up on the family farm. Mervyle attended a one room country school up until the 8th grade. She resided in Rockwell until 1940 when her parents moved to Mason City, where she has lived the remainder of her life. On November 11, 1950 she was united in marriage to Merle Carey in Rockwell. Mervyle worked for several years at Decker’s (now known as Armour) and became a homemaker after their daughter Kathy was born.

In her younger years she liked camping with her husband and also going on long walks. Mervyle and Merle would travel together to Oregon and California.

In her free time she enjoyed embroidering, cooking/baking, and circle word puzzles. She loved her grandchildren and spending time with them. In the last few years she took care of her “baby” yorkie/lhasa mix named Bella.

Mervyle will be remembered by her family as a loving and hardworking person. She was a tough lady; very resilient and lived her life devoting herself to the care of others.

Those left to cherish her memory include her daughter, Kathy Scholl; grandchildren: Jena, Jarrod, Jessi, and Jake Scholl; step-grandchildren, Latasha (Jason) Gronewold and Cody Espinosa; great-grandchildren, Trinity Schultz, Jaysys Gentz and Carston Gronewold; sisters, Lois Knudson and Lorna Suby; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Merle Carey; parents, Henry and Margaret Arndt; son in infancy, Merle Jay Carey; four brothers and three sisters.

In lieu of flowers, those planning on expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorials in care of the family.
