Gladys Moore Ellis died Oct. 8, 2015 in Maryville. She was born in Tunica, Miss., on March 23, 1922, the middle of three daughters of Clarence and Martha Anne Moore. The family moved to Memphis when Gladys was a little girl. She graduated from Central High School in 1939 and later earned a B.A. degree from Rhodes College.

In 1942, she married the late Franklin C. Ellis. They began their 67 years of married life in Texas, where he was stationed with the Army Air Corps. After WWII, they raised their family in Memphis. Gladys taught English at Treadwell High School for 18 years. She was a natural-born teacher and guided many students to a love of literature they never knew was possible. After retiring she shared her passion for reading and learning by volunteering at the Memphis Literacy Council where she was a one-on-one tutor as well as a tutor trainer. She was a member of Colonial Park Methodist Church where she taught in the Fidelis Sunday School class.

In 2000, Gladys and Franklin moved to Kirby Pines Retirement Community where they made lasting friends and enjoyed fellowship and many good times.
