Donald J. Bemis, an analyst with the Commerce Department in Washington for 22 years until his retirement in 1985, died Tuesday at his home [sic] in Swampscott. He was 62.

Mr. Bemis had been employed by United Fruit Co. in Columbia and Costa Rica before joining the federal agency.

Born in Swampscott, he graduated from St. John's Prep in 1946 and Boston College in 1952.

He leaves his wife, Dorothy (Barrett); two daughters, Mary Ann Smialek of Edmonton, Alberta, and Katherine E. of Towson, Md.; a son, Edmond F. of Bowie, Md.; his mother, Rose (Bolger) Bemis of Swampscott; four sisters, Mary of Swampscott, Aileen Crowley of Arlington, Katherine Clancy of Lynnfield and Rosemond Gorrie of Emmaus, Pa.; and a grandson.

A funeral Mass will be said at 9 a.m. tomorrow in St. John the Evangelist Church, Swampscott. Burial will be in Swampscott Cemetery.
