Shirley Behnke Kaufman, age 67, died Thursday, March 11, 1999 at her residence. Former Upper Arlington High School journalism teacher, newspaper and yearbook advisor, and administrator with the Upper Arlington City Schools, she was also former Teacher of the Year and Newspaper Fund Distinguished Journalism Instructor.

She received her bachelor's degree in journalism, master's degree in education and Ph.D. in education from The Ohio State University. Dr. Behnke was a member of the educational honorary Phi Delta Kappa, OSU Chapter, a Member of Mensa, and former president of Women in Communications (Theta Sigma Phi), Columbus Chapter. She managed the Journalism Association of Ohio Schools (JAOS) for several years.

She was a member of Saint Patrick Church, an active parish library volunteer and a member of Springs of Living Water Prayer Group, a professed member of the Third Order of St. Dominic and secretary of the local chapter of the Dominican Laiety Council. She was also active in the Central Ohio Hiking Club and Northam Park Tennis Club.

Preceded in death by husband, William F. Behnke. She is survived by husband, John Kaufman, children Doug (Robbin) Behnke of Delaware, Ohio, Curt (Peggy) Behnke of Cincinnati, Pam (Pete) Alexander of Elizabeth Colorado; mother, Delta Mae Adams of Columbus; brother Kenneth (Alice) Adams of Galena; step-children, Kathy (Gary) Baird of Columbus, Diane Kaufman (Russ) Fredette of Columbus, and Joe (Laurie) Kaufman of Cincinnati; 13 grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Friends may call Sunday 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. with prayer service at 7:30 p.m. at John Quint & Sons Funeral Home, 1177 W. Fifth Avenue. Mass and Christian Burial Monday 10 a.m., Saint Patrick Church, 376 E. Naghten St. Burial at Resurrection Cemetery. Donations in her honor may be made to St. Patrick Church Library, 376 E. Naghten St., Columbus.
