David Padfield was killed in the Winter Quarters #4 coal mine explosion at Scofield, Utah. He was with 2 other family members,brothers, all aged between 22 and 28. It was a black day in Scofield that morning. In a frontier economy most familys will not ever recover from such a loss. The Padfields had 197 other good men for company. The mine was back in business 4 weeks later.
