Thomas was the oldest of these three brothers. They went to work one day just as any other day. At 10:28 am, their day was shattered by an explosion in Winter Quarters #4 coal mine. Certainly by 3:00 pm they were all dead of the explosion, fire or after damp (carbon monoxide poisoning). It was a black day in Scofield.
In the 200 dead, were two, 14 year old boys and a 15 year old, his first day in the mine. Every corner of this dismal story holds only grief and misery. The Padfields were between 22 and 28 years.
