Elmwood, IL - Merle C. Coon, 84, of 508 Putnam died Friday, March 20, 1992, at Rosewood Care Center in East Peoria.

Born Feb. 8, 1908, in Knox County to Perle and Maggie Dawson Coon, he married Edith M. Hampson on June 3, 1931, in Galesburg. She survives.

Also surviving are three sons, Dr. John of Peoria, Wayne of Alpharetta, Ga., and Dr. David of Pullman, Wash.; two daughters, Mrs. Bill (Mary Ann) Dorris of Peoria and Mrs. Karl (Nancy) Taylor of Washington; three brothers, Cecil and Floyd, both of Pekin, and Sanford of Elmwood; three sisters, Audrey Patton of Peoria, Hazel Dixon of Bartonville and Virginia Bleichner of Knoxville; 13 grandchildren; three step grandchildren; and 10 great- grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one son, James, one brother and one sister.

He was a lifelong resident of Peoria and Marshall counties, where he farmed until retiring in 1974. He was a former Rosefield Township supervisor and had been a member of the Peoria and Marshall County Farm Bureaus since 1931. He also was a member of the Elmwood Historical Society and the Masonic Horeb Lodge in Elmwood, and a former member and past Grand Noble of the Elmwood Odd Fellows Lodge.

There will be no services or visitation. Cremation rites have been accorded, and burial of ashes will be at a later date.
