Laura was born to William and Rachel Horton Gish in early 1844 in Leesburg, Highland County, Ohio. She was reportedly one of 11 daughters.

By 1857 the family began moving westward. They first lived at Liberty Landing, then Leavenworth and finally Atchison County, Kansas by 1861. Her parents ran a hotel and she met her future husband, David, who was passing through.

Laura completed her teacher's training, and finally David returned for her just before Christmas in 1868. They were married on December 24, and moved to his home in Avoca, Jackson County, Kansas.

They were the parents of 6 children: Mary Elizabeth (1869-1931); James William (1872-1937); Martha Eldora (1874-1953); George Allen (1876-1919); Hattie Gertrude (1878-1960) and Charles H (probably Hammond) (1881-1899).

Laura lived with her family and worked on the farm, in the general store and post office until she and David moved into Holton, Kansas in 1906.

Laura died in the summer of 1926, and was buried in Holton Cemetery. Her husband of over 58 years would join her there in just a few years.
